If the change is rapid, one-sided, or comes with a lump

Do not wait for a routine cosmetic appointment. A breast that has changed over weeks or months rather than years, a change on one side only, a lump or an area of thickening, a nipple that has newly turned inwards, or a new discharge needs diagnostic assessment, and that assessment comes before any conversation about shape.

Arranging an ordinary assessment

Where the change has been gradual, affects both sides and is not accompanied by any of the above, appointments are made through the hospital outpatient line or through the appointment service described on the appointments page. Say that you are asking about a change in the shape or position of the breasts so that the right clinic time is booked. If you are travelling from outside Chongqing, say so when you book, because the assessment and any imaging can sometimes be arranged together in fewer visits.

What to bring

Bring any previous breast imaging and its reports, records of any earlier breast surgery, a list of your current medicines and allergies, and the names of any conditions you are being treated for. Old photographs, if you have them, are more useful than you would expect, because they show how much has changed and over what period. Mention any family history of breast or ovarian cancer, and whether a pregnancy is planned.

What happens at the consultation

Expect an examination rather than a presentation. Where the nipple sits relative to the fold, how the skin behaves when the breast is supported, where the volume sits and whether the upper part is empty, and what the chest wall and posture are doing. You should leave knowing whether skin, volume or both are responsible, whether anything should be done about it, and what the options and their limits are.
